What Is Module Programming?

Module programming involves writing software, configuration data, and security credentials to a vehicle's electronic control modules. This is necessary when a module is replaced (new modules come blank and must be programmed to your specific vehicle), when module software needs updating, when key data must be rewritten after a security-related repair, or when a module has lost its programming due to electrical faults, water damage, or battery issues. Each vehicle manufacturer uses proprietary programming protocols and software, requiring specialized tools and licenses to perform correctly.

Body Control Module (BCM) Programming

The BCM is the central hub for many vehicle functions including keyless entry, door locks, windows, lighting, and in many vehicles, key authentication. BCM failures are common in vehicles from Nissan/Infiniti, GM, Ford, and Chrysler. Symptoms include remote keyless entry not working, interior lights malfunctioning, windows operating erratically, and in some cases, the vehicle not recognizing the key at all. We program replacement BCMs and reprogram existing BCMs that have lost their configuration, including re-registering all keys to the new module.

BMW FEM/BDC and CAS Module Services

BMW's Footwell Electronics Module (FEM/BDC) in F and G-series vehicles, and the Car Access System (CAS) in E-series vehicles, are the central security and comfort modules. These modules manage key authentication, comfort access, start authorization, and numerous comfort functions. Common issues include FEM corruption after battery disconnection, CAS failures requiring replacement, and key synchronization errors. We program replacement FEM and CAS modules, transfer key data, and synchronize with the DME (engine computer) using BMW ISTA diagnostics.

Land Rover KVM Programming
