1. The chip was never registered

By far the most common cause, and it usually traces back to a hardware store or a key kiosk. Those machines duplicate the blade beautifully and cannot register a chip, because registering a chip requires diagnostic equipment connected to the vehicle. The customer walks away with a key that opens everything and starts nothing, sometimes without realizing that is what they bought.

2. The transponder chip failed or came loose

Chips do die, though it is rarer than people assume. More common is a chip that has come loose inside the key head, especially in a key that has been dropped repeatedly or has a cracked plastic shell. On many keys the chip is held in a small pocket with adhesive, and a decade of pocket lint and thermal cycling in a Texas summer eventually beats the adhesive.

The tell is intermittency before total failure. If the key worked most of the time, then some of the time, then not at all, that is a physical fault rather than a registry problem.

3. The key was erased by a later programming session

This one surprises people, and it is worth understanding because it is not a mistake.

When a car has lost every key, the technician does not simply add one - the immobilizer registry is wiped and rebuilt from scratch. That is a security feature: if your key was stolen rather than misplaced, you want the stolen key dead. Any key not present in the room during that procedure gets invalidated along with it.

So if you had an all-keys-lost service done at some point, then later found the old key in a coat pocket, the old key will open the doors forever and will never start the car again until it is re-registered. 4. The vehicle hit its registered key limit

5. It is a proximity key with a flat battery

On push-to-start cars, a dead coin cell produces almost exactly this picture. The door buttons stop working at range, and the car refuses to start - not because the key is unregistered but because it can no longer transmit.

Test It Yourself Before You Pay Anybody

Watch the security light. Sit in the car with the bad key and watch the dash icon shaped like a key or a car with a lock. With a good key it lights briefly and goes out. With an unrecognized key it typically stays lit or flashes steadily. That flashing light is the car saying it received an answer it did not accept, and it confirms the fault is the key handshake rather than the starter or fuel system.

Compare the two blades side by side in good light. If the working key is visibly more worn than the failing one, they may not be the same cut at all. If the failing key is visibly more worn, add a mechanical fault to the list of suspects.

Try the fob-to-button test on push-to-start cars. Hold the failing fob directly against the start button, or against the marked spot on the column that your owner manual identifies, and press. If the car starts, the key is registered and the battery is the fault. If it does not, the key is not registered. Two things worth knowing before you book. First, bring both keys.
