Honda HR-V, Fit and Insight Key Replacement Cost in Plano (2026)

Real 2026 price ranges for Honda HR-V, Fit and Insight key replacement in Plano - why the same model year splits into two completely different keys by trim, what all keys lost actually costs on these three, and which jobs finish in your driveway.

Honda HR-V, Fit and Insight Key Replacement Cost in Plano (2026)

The HR-V, the Fit and the Insight are the three Hondas most likely to surprise their owners at the counter. They are the affordable end of the Honda lineup, so people reasonably assume the key will be the cheap one too. Sometimes it is. Just as often the car in your driveway carries a proximity smart key that costs double what the identical-looking car two spaces over costs, and nobody finds out until they ask. For mobile Honda key service anywhere in Plano, call or text (945) 307-3827.

Quick Answer

As of September 2026, a Honda HR-V, Fit or Insight bladed transponder key cut and programmed in Plano runs roughly $130 to $270 when one working key still exists, and a proximity smart key runs roughly $200 to $410. With every key gone, expect $200 to $430 on bladed models and $320 to $600 or more on smart-key models, because the key has to be built from vehicle data rather than copied from something the car already trusts.

Those are ranges rather than one number, and that is deliberate. Nobody can honestly quote a Honda key to the dollar before knowing the model, the build year, the trim and whether a working key still exists. What follows is the honest version of what moves you inside the range.

What Actually Changes the Price

Whether one key still works

This is the single biggest lever on the bill, and it outweighs everything else combined. With a working key in hand, a technician is adding a credential to a system that already trusts something. With every key gone, the same technician has to pull the key code tied to your VIN, cut a blade to specification instead of copying an existing one, and then persuade an immobilizer that currently trusts nobody to accept a brand new key. On these three models that gap runs roughly $100 to $200, and the session takes about twice as long.

If you are reading this while you still have one working key, the cheapest automotive locksmith decision available to you today is a spare made this week. The price of a spare never goes down. We walk through the economics of that decision in detail in our guide to adding a key versus all keys lost.

Bladed transponder versus proximity smart key

A bladed transponder key is a physical key with a chip in the head. The blade gets cut, the chip gets registered, and the job is done. A proximity smart key is a small radio computer that talks to the car continuously, and the part itself costs meaningfully more before anybody opens a programming tool.

Honda ran both systems side by side on all three of these models, and the split is by trim, not by model year. A 2019 HR-V on the LX trim is very often a turn-the-key car. A 2019 HR-V on the EX-L is a push-button smart-key car. Same badge, same year, two different parts at two different prices. This is the number one reason a phone quote comes back as a range instead of a figure.

The fastest way to place yourself on the table: if you insert a key and twist it, you are on the cheaper side. If you carry the fob in your pocket and press a button on the dash, you are on the higher side.

Model year band

Newer versions of these cars are not automatically harder to program, but the parts cost more. The 2023-and-later HR-V sits on a different platform from the 2016-2022 car and takes a different, more expensive fob. The second-generation Insight from 2019 onward takes a smart key that costs more at the counter than anything the Fit ever used. Meanwhile a 2012 Fit bladed key is one of the least expensive jobs we do on any make, full stop.

How many keys you want made

Almost the entire cost of an all-keys-lost job is the session, not the key. Once the immobilizer is open and a technician is already working in it, adding a second key costs the part plus fifteen or twenty minutes. Making two keys today is close to half the price of making one key today and a second one next spring. We say this to every all-keys-lost customer, and most of them take the second key.

Where the car is and what time it is

Mobile service across Plano, Frisco, McKinney, Allen, Richardson and Garland is included in the ranges above during normal hours. Overnight and holiday response carries a surcharge, and we confirm that number on the phone before anyone is dispatched. Nobody should learn about a fee when the invoice appears. If you are weighing a same-day call against waiting until morning, our piece on what response time really means is the honest version of that math.

Costs by Model

Honda HR-V (2016-2026)

The HR-V is the most common of these three in Plano, and it is a clean trim split. The 2016-2022 LX is usually a bladed transponder car in the $130 to $270 band. EX and EX-L trims from the same years are push-button smart-key cars at $200 to $410. All keys lost on a smart-key HR-V lands at $320 to $600 or more.

The 2023-and-later HR-V moved onto Honda's newer small-car platform and brought a newer fob with it. The programming procedure is routine for a properly equipped mobile technician, but the part is more expensive and the range shifts up accordingly.

One HR-V-specific note worth knowing before you call: the emergency blade hidden inside a smart key opens the driver's door but will not start the car. That matters if you are locked out with the fob visible on the passenger seat, because the answer is a lockout, not a key replacement, and it is a much cheaper visit.

Honda Fit (2007-2020)

The Fit is the least expensive Honda key we make, and for most of its production run it is a straightforward bladed transponder job. Early cars, 2007 through roughly 2014, are the cheap end of the table. The 2015-2020 generation added smart-key availability on EX and EX-L trims, so a late Fit can land on either side of the table depending on how it was optioned.

Because the Fit stayed in production so long and sold well as a used car, a large share of the Fits we work on in Plano are second- or third-owner cars that arrived with exactly one key. That is the classic setup for an expensive night later. A Fit spare is the cheapest insurance in this entire article.

Honda Insight (2010-2014 and 2019-2022)

The Insight is two different cars wearing one name. The first-generation hybrid from 2010 to 2014 uses a bladed transponder key and prices like an older Civic. The 2019-2022 Insight is essentially a Civic underneath, carries a modern smart key on the higher trims, and prices accordingly at $200 to $410 for an added key.

Hybrids raise one question we get constantly, so here is the answer: the hybrid system has nothing to do with key programming. Your key talks to the immobilizer, and the immobilizer does not care whether the car burns gasoline, electricity or both. An Insight key job runs exactly like the equivalent Civic key job.

What the Dealership Quote Usually Looks Like

We are not going to pretend the dealer never makes sense. What we will say is that the comparison is rarely apples to apples, and the difference is usually in three places.

The first is the tow. A dealership quote on an all-keys-lost car is a quote for work performed at the dealership, which means the car has to get there. On a car that cannot start, that is a tow, and a tow inside Plano is real money that never appears on the key quote.

The second is the schedule. Dealer key work usually means an appointment, and on the small-volume models in this article it can also mean ordering the fob. A mobile technician carries the common parts and finishes in your driveway or your office lot the same day.

The third is the parts markup on models like these. The HR-V and Insight fobs are not exotic, but they are not high-volume either, and that shows up at a parts counter more than it shows up in a van that stocks by platform rather than by model.

A fuller comparison lives in our post on the auto locksmith versus the dealership for key replacement.

When It Is Not the Key at All

A meaningful share of the Honda calls we take are not key replacement jobs, and we would rather tell you that on the phone than after we arrive.

If the car cranks normally but will not fire and the security indicator is lit, that is an immobilizer conversation rather than a cut-and-program conversation, and it is covered in our walkthrough of what the immobilizer light actually means.

If the key still starts the car but the lock and unlock buttons went dead, the remote side of the fob has failed while the transponder side is healthy. That is often a battery, sometimes a cracked solder joint, and only occasionally a new key. The distinction is laid out in our post on a key that starts the car with dead lock buttons.

If your fob eats batteries every few weeks, something is drawing current that should not be, and replacing the fob without finding it just buys a more expensive version of the same problem. That pattern is diagnosed in our guide to a smart key whose battery dies fast.

And if you bought the car used with no key at all and no idea where the original went, the process is documented in our piece on getting a replacement car key with no original.

What a Mobile Visit Actually Looks Like

For a spare on a car with one working key, plan on half an hour to an hour. The technician confirms the key generation against your VIN, cuts the blade or pairs the smart key, registers it to the immobilizer, then tests every function in front of you: start, lock, unlock, panic and, on the smart-key cars, walk-up detection and the push-button start itself.

For an all-keys-lost car, add time. The key code has to be pulled and verified, the blade has to be cut to specification rather than duplicated, and the immobilizer registration takes longer because there is no trusted credential to work from. On some platforms there is a built-in security wait that nobody can shorten. That waiting time is real labor and it is in the quote.

Either way the car stays where it is. There is no tow, no appointment window at a service drive, and no sitting in a waiting room in Frisco while somebody cuts a key you could have had in your own parking spot.

We bring proof of ownership up on every one of these calls, so it is worth saying plainly: expect to show a photo ID and documentation tying you to the vehicle before any key is programmed. That is not bureaucracy for its own sake. It is the single thing that stops someone else from having a key made to your HR-V.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much is a Honda HR-V key in Plano?

As of September 2026, a bladed transponder HR-V key runs roughly $130 to $270 when you still have a working key, and a push-button proximity smart key runs roughly $200 to $410. With all keys lost, expect $200 to $430 on bladed cars and $320 to $600 or more on smart-key cars. Trim, not model year, decides which one you have.

Why is my HR-V key more expensive than my neighbor's identical HR-V?

Almost always trim. Honda sold bladed transponder keys and proximity smart keys in the same model years, split by trim level. Two 2019 HR-Vs parked side by side can genuinely take two different keys at two different prices.

Can you make a Honda Fit key with no original key at all?

Yes. That is the all-keys-lost job. We pull the key code tied to your VIN, cut a blade to specification and register a new key to the immobilizer at your location. It costs more and takes longer than adding a spare, but the car does not need to be towed anywhere.

Is a hybrid Insight key harder to program than a regular Honda key?

No. The hybrid drivetrain has nothing to do with the immobilizer. A 2019 Insight key job runs like the equivalent Civic job of the same year and trim.

Can I buy a Honda fob online and have you program it?

Sometimes. Fobs sold online are frequently the wrong frequency or FCC ID for your build, and some arrive already locked to another vehicle and cannot be reused. When a customer-supplied fob checks out we will program it. When it does not, you have paid for a part you cannot use. We stock the correct parts so that is not your problem.

How long does a Honda key take on site?

A spare with one working key is typically 30 to 60 minutes. An all-keys-lost smart-key job runs 60 to 120 minutes depending on the platform and how cleanly the vehicle communicates.
